Project Background
The United States Marine Corps initiated planning and conceptual design efforts for the replacement of the 72-slip Camp Pendleton Marina floating dock system. The project involved evaluating existing timber dock structures and developing conceptual designs for improved marina operations, accessibility, and utility services.
Marina Planning and Design
While employed by AECOM, Anthony T. Mets, P.E. served as a Discipline Lead for the Camp Pendleton Marina project. Mr. Mets developed concept-level layouts and Form-1391 cost estimates for the replacement dock system and produced five alternative layout concepts for the existing marina using prestressed precast concrete guide piles as the anchoring system.
The scope of work included evaluation of existing geotechnical reports, preliminary pile layouts for 24-inch diameter prestressed precast concrete piles, marina slip mix tables, and conceptual design of ADA-compliant gangways and ramp systems. Additional work included planning for potable water service upgrades and dock electrical improvements..
Coastal Engineering and Structural Considerations
Coastal engineering and structural considerations were integrated into the conceptual design of the marina, including evaluation of anchoring systems and floating dock stability under operational and environmental loads. Preliminary structural design for guide piles ensured the replacement marina would meet long-term operational requirements, as well as comply with the current design standards and industry guidelines.
